Faculty of Clinical Informatics holds inaugural Annual Scientific Conference to over 150 delegates from digital health and social care

On 8th October, the Faculty of Clinical Informatics held their first ever Annual Scientific Conference to over 150 informaticians in the UK and internationally using a virtual platform

The first UKFCI Scientific Conference contained a mixture of scientific papers, ePosters, instructional courses and keynote speeches, to offer a range of content to a great turnout of delegates. Sessions were interspersed with breakout networking sessions.

Highlights included Dr Sarah Slight’s Prestigious Guest Presentation on big data and her work developing a clinical decision system for sepsis, and the International Guest Presentation from Professor Suzanne Bakken of Columbia University on how we can reduced health inequalities (as well as celebrating the achievements of nurses in clinical informatics).

Other key sessions came from Beverley Bryant (Guy’s & St Thomas’), Dr Claudia Pagliari (Director of Global eHealth, University of Edinburgh), Dr Mark Davies (Watson Health/IBM) and Will Monaghan (NHSX).

Instructional courses were on a range of topics, including artificial intelligence, interoperability, innovative informatics in mental health and pharmacy, SNOMED CT and virtual clinics. The AI session included pitches on how AI and informatics can improve healthcare, judged by Prof Shafi Ahmed, Dr Indra Joshi and Dr Cian Hughes. Congrats to the winner Dr Sandy Davey who received a prize from sponsors Data Robot! And thanks to runners up Asmâa Hidki and Zaki Almallah for their brilliant contributions.

The day wrapped up with a very important session - the official launch of the UKFCI Core Competency Framework, a flagship piece of work supported by Health Education England and developed with the University of Manchester. The session explained how the competencies were developed and how they will be further used and integrated into clinical informatics training and education. Many thanks to Dr Alan Hassey, Prof Georgina Moulton and Dr John Williams, for this session.

Before we all signed off, former FCI Chair and current Chair of Trustees Dr John Williams had some prizes to give out. Congratulations to Esther Moore for winning Best ePoster and Clare Tolley for winning Best Scientific Paper – prizes and certificates are on their way!

From the Faculty, we’d like to give huge thanks to Healthcare Conference UK for their excellent running of the conference and to the members of the FCI Events Committee (Nick Booth, Tashfeen Kholasi, Lou Wilson & Zaki Almallah) for their organisation and putting together the programme. Particular thanks to Prof Angus Wallace, Committee Chair, for all his hard work.

We will be sharing highlights of the conference on social media over the coming weeks, so make sure to follow us on Twitter (@UKFCI), LinkedIn & Facebook.

Finally, thank you to all who attended and made the day such a success. We hope you enjoyed the programme and will join us again next year, hopefully in person! And remember, you can access the sessions on the HCUK platform for 3 months after the event.
